Mariners at Athletics, July 10th - Dickey Delivers, Morrow Melts

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

What a day! I’m ready for a nap. R.A. Dickey pitched seven scoreless innings, and set the Mariners up for a series tying win. Unfortuneatley, the lights-out Morrow gave up two solo homers in the bottom of the ninth to even up the score 2-2 and send the game in to extra innings. A couple innings and an Emil Brown game-winning homer later, and I’m left to sit in a dark room and listen to myself sigh. Huuughhhhhhhhhh.

I’d like to first extend my gratitude and apologies to R.A. Dickey who threw a dandy of a game and lasted through seven. As for Brandon Morrow, his ERA just jumped above 1.00. Okay, he’s off the hook. He throws hard, they were solo shots, no big deal.

Ichiro managed to get a walk in a game that he had off. That’s production! Bloomquist put up three hits, including his first extra-base hit of the season! If I had confetti I’d throw it.

Richie Sexson didn’t have his best game, but he didn’t strike out either. He was let go. Of all the cities to get the axe though, San Francisco isn’t half bad. That’s where their hotel was anyway. At least Richie could spend today at an art museum or down at the wharf to clear his mind.

Sexson Released Over Bad Posture

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Listen up boys and girls! All of those times your mother told you to sit up straight had nothing to do with manners, and everything to do with retaining your job as a professional baseball player. According to Jim Street at mlb.com, “The body language Richie Sexson displayed on Wednesday night after seeing that he wasn’t in the Mariners’ starting lineup, persuaded the organization to cut ties with the veteran first baseman.”

Richie’s release clearly had very little to do with his .218 average, sub-par fielding skills, and striking out in over 30% of his at-bats. The Mariners will wind up eating about seven million dollars, get nothing in return, and yet somehow I’m left feeling like this is all for the best.

So, happy trails Richie Sexson. May you find your funk blast again.

Who’s next?
